Perth Trip April 2011


Day 1 Sunday, 3rd April 
Armidale to Forbes

We packed the Camry wagon and headed off very early in the morning. On the Coolah Rd we stopped to photograph these wattles. We arrived at Forbes by mid afternoon and set up the tent on our favourite spot.
Wir haben unser Gepaeck im Auto eingepackt und sind ganz frueh abgefahren. Am Coolah Strasse haben wir diese Akazien fotografiert. Wir sind dann am Nachmittag in Forbes angekommen und den Zelt gleich auf unserem Lieblingscampingplatz aufgestellt.

Day 2 Monday, 4th April 
Forbes to Kerang

Kow Swamp in Victoria is important archaeologically. It is the site of prehistoric Aboriginal skeletal remains. It is now used as an irrigation storage.
Kow Swamp ist beruehmt fuer die Vergangenheit. Hier haben die Skeletreste von vor 9000 Jahre gefunden.

     

River Red Gums were once harvested along the Murray. We camped at Kerang Caravan Park which narrowly escaped the recent floods. A local showed us this photo taken during the height of the flood. It shows Kerang isolated.
Die Eucalytusbaeume an dem Fluss Murray waren jahrelang abgeholzt bis es jetzt sehr wenig gibt. Der Flut in Februar hat Kerang (im Foto) isoliert.

    

Day 3 Tuesday, 5th April 
Kerang to Burra SA

We drove across the SA border and handed over the last of our vegetables. Don cooked up his usual Turkish coffee on the road. I used coffee bags and the Pump pot which we filled each night. We crossed over on this free car ferry and pulled into the copper mining township of Burra in the mid afternoon.
Wir sind ueber die Sued Australischen Grenze gefahren wo wir Obst und Gemuese wegschmeissen muessten. Der Don kochte seinen tuerkischen Kaffee unterwegs. Ich habe Kaffeetueten und heisses Wasser in einer Thermoskanne benutzt. Mit der Faehre haben wir den Fluss ueberkreuzt dann in Burra Campingplatz gezeltet. Burra ist beruehmt fuer Kupferminen.

 

Day 4 Wednesday, 6th April 
Burra to Ceduna

We drove past small townships until the country became more arid and we followed the pipeline to Port Augusta. Here we called in to the Arid Lands Botanic Gardens for photos and some identification guides.
Die Landschaft unterwegs war mehr und mehr trocken. Wir haben eine Rohrleitung gefolgt und sind nach Port Augusta gefahren wo wir dir Wueste Botanische Garten besuchten. Hier haben wir fotografiert und Buecher gekauft.

         


         

We continued on towards Ceduna stopping along the way to have lunch near Iron Knob. The road began to straighten out as we crossed the top of the Eyre Peninsula. We camped at Ceduna which is a sought after fishing place. The caravan parks were full of huge vans, boats and cars. We finally found a small corner at Shelley Beach which was full of dogs and had some strange bathroom arrangements including the largest toilet seat we'd ever seen.
Wir sind weiter nach Ceduna gefahren. Bei Iron Knob haben wir zu Mittag gegessen. Die gerade Strasse faerht jetzt durch die Wueste. Ceduna ist ein Kleinstadt beruehmt fuer angeln. Alle Campingplaetze waren voll aber wir haben eine Ecke auf Shelley Beach gefunden. Es gab auch viele Hunde da und einen uebergrossen Toiletensitz.

   

Day 5 Thursday, 7th April 
Ceduna to Madura Roadhouse

We left at dawn as usual and headed west across the Nullarbor plains, stopping for breakfast at the Nullarbor roadhouse and visiting the Bight but it was too early for whales. We drove on stopping to collect mallee seed and have lunch. The flies were terrible. We hired a budget cabin at Madura Roadhouse - it had an interesting sign. The only phone access was at these landline booths.
Wir sind ganz frueh wie immer abgefahren richtung Nullarbor. Bei dem Nullarbor Roadhouse haben wir gefruestueckt und in der Naehe sind wir an der Kueste angekommen. Hier haben wir ein Spaziergang gemacht. Es war zu frueh fuer Walen - schade! Unterwegs habe ich Eucalyptussamen gesamelt und wir haben zu Mittag gegessen. Die Fliegen waren furchtbar! Dann auf der West Australishen Grenze muessten wir Honig, Obst und Gemuese wegschmeissen. Wir sind weiter nach Madura Roadhouse gefahren. Hier haben wir eine Kabine gemietet. Drinnen war eine Warnung gegen giftigen Schlangen. Man muss die Tuer immer zumachen sonst kommen die Schlangen herein. Man konnte auch nur in diesen Zellen anrufen. Zu Abend gab es sehr teueres Bier!

       

       

                 

Day 6 Friday, 8th April
Madura to Ravensthorpe

We left Madura at dawn and headed west. At Cocklebiddy roadhouse where we had breakfast, we came across the German Mercedes F-Cell team with their 3 concept cars and compressed hydrogen tankers. They were on a world tour and were heading for Perth. We spoke to a couple of engineers and worked out that the cars would not be suitable for Australia as they have a limited range. There are problems with supply of the compressed gas as well so they would have to work on the supply side before the cars would really be viable. Still it's an alternative energy and if it can replace petrol in high density countries such as India and China that would be a great advance. After Perth the team was flying to Shanghai to drive across China and on to Europe.

Wir sind nochmal ganz frueh abgefahren und haben bei Cocklebiddy gefruehstueckt. Dort haben wir den F-Cell Team aus Stuttgart getroffen. Die machten eine Weltreise mit drei Autos die gepresstes Wasserstoffgas benutzen. Die hatten auch 2 Tanker dabei und haben schon die Reise ueber Amerika gemacht. Ihr Ziel war Perth dann wollten sie nach China fliegen und weiter nach Europa fahren. So ein Fahrstoffist in Australien nicht machbar aber in Indien oder China wird's sich lohnen.

       

We finally left the Nullarbor behind at Norseman and headed south to Esperance to visit Don's neice, Yvonne and her two children, Hannah and Jonathan. We also bought supplies for the next leg of the journey. Along the way we stopped to photograph our first Banksias.

Am Vormittag hatten wir den Nullarbar hinter uns und dann fahrten wir suedlich nach Esperance wo wir Dons Nichte Yvonne und ihre zwei Kinder besuchten. Unterwegs haben wir diese Banksias fotografiert.

It was getting late so we pulled into Ravensthorpe caravan park and hired a van for the night. The park was very run down and full of kitch. Don was aghast at the terrible stonework in the camp kitchen. We had a thunderstorm that night, our first rain for the whole journey.

Am Nachmittag waren wir in Ravensthorpe. Hier haben wir einen sehr alten Wohnwagen gemietet. Es hat durch die Nacht gewittert.

       

Day 7 Saturday, 9th April
Ravensthorpe to Perth

We stopped off at the Fitzgerald River NP to photograph some of the flora. Unfortunately the road to Port Anne was closed.
Unterwegs haben wir in den Fitzerald River NP fotografiert. Der Weg nach Port Anne war geschlossen.

       

We drove towards the Stirling Range NP but it was disappointing as the whole area was recovering from fire. It was time to head north to Perth. We took the new freeways and arrived at Ben's place in the afternoon.
Wir sind Richtung Stirling Range NP gefahren aber war sehr enttaeuscht. Der Park ueberholt sich nach einem grossen Buschfeuer. Wir sind dann nordlich gefahren. Die neue Autobahnen waren prima. Wir sind bei Ben am nachmittag angekommen.



Day 8 Sunday, 10th April
Perth
Ben's house is in Beldon north of Perth and near the beach. The yard is deep sand which is good for digging but hard to maintain moisture. There is one good retaining wall but the rest of the slope needs more walls. We decided to start with the gardens around the house. I cut out the Bougainvillea which was a real maintenance problem.
Bens Haus ist in Beldon, nordlich von Perth und in der Naehe vom Strand. Es steht auf tiefen Sand, der wenig Wasser behaltet. Der Hof ist steil und braucht Steinmauern. Wir sind ums Haus den Garten zu renovieren angefangen.

               

Days 9-13 Monday-Friday, 11th-15th April
Perth
We spent the week working in the garden. The steel sleeper supports didn't work in the sand so we bought stakes and screwed them to the sleepers. We built gardens around the house and relaid the pavers.
Wir haben die ganze Woche im Garten gearbeitet. Die Stahltraeger waren nicht benutztbar im Sand - wir muessten Holzpfosten benutzen. Wir bauten neue Gaerten und haben die Platten neu gepflastert.

         

         

               

         

         

         

         

 

Saturday, 16th April
Rottnest Island

We took the train to Esperance and then boarded the ferry for a trip up the Swan River and on to Rottnest Island.  We hired bicycles and rode around the island - 27 kms.
It was very beautiful with scenic views everywhere. We finished the ride with a beer and then boarded the ferry again for the trip back to Perth. ben demonstated how to throw a boomerang to some Asian tourists.

Wir sind zuerst mit der Bahn nach Esperance gefahren dann mit der Faehre den Fluss Swan entlang und dann Richtung Rottnest Insel gefahren. Am Rottnest Insel haben wir Fahrraeder gemietet und sind um das Insel gefahren. Es gab wunderschoene Ausblicke. Endlich haben wir ein Bier getrunken und mit der Faehre die Rueckreise gemacht. In Perth hat Ben fuer ein Paar Chinesen Boomerang schmeissen demonstriert.

         

         

         

         

         

         

         

         

  

Day 16  Monday, 18th April
Kings Park Botanic Gardens

Don and I travelled by train to the city and then took the bus to Kings Park. We spent time photographing as much as we could but there weren't many wattles in flower. The banksias were beautiful.

Don und ich sind nach Perth mit der Bahn gefahren und dann zum Kings Park mit dem Bus gefahren. Wir haben viel fotografiert aber leider gab es wenige Akazien. Die Banksias waren herrlich!

Day 17 Tuesday, 19th April
West Australian Museum

We took the train into the city and while Don spent the morning in the museum, I went shopping.
Wir sind nochmal in die Stadt mit der Bahn gefahren. Als Don hat im Museum fotografiert, ich bin einkaufen gegangen.

       

Day 18 Wednesday, 20th April
Yanchep National Park

We drove north to Yanchep NP where there are limestone caves and a small Koala sanctuary.
Wir sind nordlich gefahren nach Yanchep NP wo es Hoelle und einen kleinen Koala Zoo gibt.

                

                     

   
Days 19-20 21st-22nd April
Ben House

We stayed home for the next two days constructing the new front garden and helping Ben to cut down some large branches that were close to his power line. On Good Friday I baked Hot Cross buns for breakfast.
Wir bleibten die naechsten zwei Tage zuhause und bauten den Garten am Vorne. Wir haben auch mit abholzen geholfen. Es gab grosse Aeste neben dem Stromleitung. Am Karfreitag habe ich Osterbroetchen gebacken.

         

       

Day 21, Saturday, 23rd April
Wildflower Society

We visited the Northern suburbs branch of the Australian Wildflower Society and met with some of their members. They rent out a large igloo on an experimental farm and meet every Saturday morning to work on their collections and open to the public although there weren't any customers that day. Back at home I started doing some mending on my machine.

Wir haben eine Australische Pflanzgruppe am Samstag besucht. Sie mieten ein Gewaechshaus auf einem experimentellen Bauernhof um ihre Sammlungen zu lagern und treffen sich jeden Samstagmorgen. Sie verkaufen auch einige Pflanzen. Zuhause habe ich ein bisschen genaeht.

         

 

Day 22, Easter Sunday, 24th April
Picnic

It was a lovely day but rain was threatening for the afternoon. We packed a picnic lunch and drove to the beach where we found a park for lunch. After that we visited a favourite windsurfing spot where we watched someone windkiting. We had a coffee at the pub and took photos of the large houses which are quite normal here.

Frohe Ostern! Der Tag war schoen aber es sollte am Nachnittag regnen. Wir sind zum Nachbarstadtteil gefahren und dort in einem Park am Strand gegessen. Nach dem Picnic haben wir einige Windkiter beobachtet und die grosse Haeuser, die hier ganz normal sind, fotografiert. Zum Schluss haben wir Kaffee in einer Kneipe getrunken.

         

       

 

Day 23, Monday 25th April
Perth to Norseman

We left before dawn and drove east through the suburbs and onto the Kalgoorlie Highway. The Mallees were lovely and I collected lots of seed. We followed the pipeline taking water to Kalgoorlie. We spent the night in Norseman.

Wir sind sehr frueh auf der Rueckreise nach Kalgoorlie abgefahren. Die Eucalyptusbaeume waren sehr schoen. Ich habe viele Samen gesammelt. Die Wasserleitung nach Kalgoorlie liegt neben der Autobahn. Wir haben in Norseman uebernachtet.

     

         

Day 24, Tuesday 26th April
Anzac Day
Norseman to Eucla

We drove off at dawn and turned onto the Nullarbor Highway stopping at Cocklebiddy Roadhouse for breakfast. The V8 Supercars were on their way to Perth and we passed them all that day. There is a nice little local museum at Cocklebiddy where Don photographed some artifacts. At Eucla we set up the tent then drove down to the Old Telegraph Station which is almost covered in sand.

Wir sind frueh abgefahren und bei Cocklebiddy Roadhouse gefruehstueckt. Dor haben sie ein kleines Museum - Don hat alles fotografiert. Die V8 Superrennautos waren auf dem Weg nach Perth - wir haben alle vorbeigefahren. In Eucla haben wir den Zelt aufgestellt und sind dann zum alten Telegraph Station gefahren. Die Ruinen sind fast mit Sand versteckt.

                          

       

Day 25, Wednesday 27th April
Eucla to Widunna

Another early start across the SA border and the end of the Nullarbor then Fowler's Bay where we looked for a Correa unsuccessfully. We bought supplies in Ceduna and drove on to Widunna where we camped for the night.
Nochmal sind wir ganz frueh abgefahren, ueber die SA Grenze und das Ende des Nullarbors. Wir sind in Ceduna einkaufen gegangen und fahten weiter nach Widunnawo wir uebernachteten.

     

   

Day 26, Thursday 28th April
Widunna to Broken Hill

It was a fairly boring drive across SA through Port Augusta then Peterborough and crossing the NSW border just before we reached Broken Hill - it was nice to set the tent up on grass again. Very civilised!
Die Reise ueber Sued Australien war ziemlich langweilig - wir sind durch Port Augusta und Peterborough gefahren dann ueber die NSW Grenze und Nach Broken Hill wo wir am Rasen gezeltet haben. Sehr zivilisiert!

     

Day 27, Friday 29th April
Broken Hill to Gilgandra

We left early and drove across the western plains through the various towns until we reached Gilgandra. This was our last night camping. We went to the Wildflower Reserve but there was nothing to photograph. Returning to town we had a beer at the Royal and dinner at the Chinese restaurant where we watched the start of the Royal Wedding.

Wir sind frueh abgefahren und immer oestlich durch Doerfer und Kleinstaedte bis wir Gilgandra erreichte. Hier haben wir die Wildflower Reserve besichtigt aber es gab nichts zu fotografieren. Dann fahrten wir zurueck in die Stadt wo wir ein Bier getrunken haben und bei dem chinesischen Restaurant gegessen haben. Die Stadt feierte das Edelhochzeit von William und Kate.

   

  
Day 28, Saturday 30th April
Gilgandra to Armidale
Up early and homewards bound. We arrived around 2.00 pm. It was good to be home again.
Die letzte Strecke nach Armidale war ziemlich schnell und wir waren um 14 Uhr wieder zuhause. Gut gemacht!
